HiDALGO2 Research on Urban Solar Exposure and Wildfire Management Awarded Best Paper at AISyS 2024

The paper “AI for Global Challenges: Case Studies in Urban Solar Exposure and Wildfire Management”, developed as part of the HiDALGO2 project was named as one of four “Best Papers” at the the First International Conference on AI-based Systems and Services AISyS 2024.

Giorgos Filandrianos of the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems at the National Technical University of Athens (ICCS – NTUA) presented the work which tackles two pressing environmental issues: urban solar exposure and wildfire management. Filandrianos was a lead author of the paper together with Angeliki Dimitriou.

By integrating Artificial Intelligence and High-Performance Data Analytics, the approach developed by researchers under the HiDALGO2 project predicts urban shading effects accurately using graph neural networks (GNNs). Further, it can enhance wildfire management through sophisticated pre-computed simulations.

This dual application allows for more effective planning and response strategies, ultimately leading to better sustainability practices.

The research significantly improves data handling and predictive capabilities, offering essential tools for policymakers and urban planners to address complex climate-related challenges effectively.

The AISyS 2024 conference was held by the International Academy, Research and Industry Association (IARIA) from September 29 – October 3 in Venice as part of the SoftNet 2024 Congress. Papers were awarded based on the reviews of the original submission, the camera-ready version, and the presentation during the conference.
