HiDALGO2 & EXCELLERAT at HiPEAC 2026: Showcasing the Value of CoEs

The HiPEAC 2026 Conference in Kraków, Poland (January 26–28), brought together Europe’s leading experts in computer architecture and high-performance computing. Beyond the technical sessions, a major highlight for the project was the exploration of how Centres of Excellence (CoEs) deliver tangible value to the European research landscape and industry.

The CoE Workshop: Rethinking Scientific Applications

On Tuesday, January 27th, HiDALGO2 participated in the full-day workshop: “Rethinking Scientific Applications for Exascale and Emerging Architectures: The Centre of Excellence Challenge.”

Organised by a consortium of CoEs, the workshop focused on the urgent need to modernise scientific codes. Participants shared hands-on experiences in adapting legacy algorithms for next-generation heterogeneous architectures, ensuring that simulations for global challenges—like urban air quality and wildfires—can run efficiently on Europe’s most powerful supercomputers.

Strategic Roundtable: “Beyond Technical Achievements”

A key segment of the workshop was the afternoon roundtable (14:00–14:40), titled “Beyond Technical Achievements: Showcasing the Value of Centres of Excellence.” This session explored the socio-economic impact of HPC, looking at how research results reach the market and benefit society.

The panel featured a collective of European HPC experts:

  • A. Eymash (HLRS, Germany) – Representing HiDALGO2 and EXCELLERAT P2
  • A. Ferretti (CNR, Italy) – Representing MaX CoE
  • M. Kronbichler (Ruhr University Bochum, Germany) – Representing EXCELLERAT P2
  • I. Siloi (Università di Padova, Italy)
  • D. Gregori (E4 Computer Engineering, Italy)

Abdullatif A. Eymash from the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) respresented HiDALGO2 and EXCELLERAT P2, underlining the strong synergies between these two projects.

His participation emphasised the collective efforts of the CoEs to bridge the gap between exascale-ready software development and the real-world applications such as engineering optimisation and global challenge simulations, that define the value of European supercomputing initiatives.
