HiDALGO2 Wildfire Simulations Presented at Spain’s 7th Technical Conference on Wildland Fires

On October 21, the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) hosted the 7th Technical Conference on Wildland Fires.

The event was organized by the Spanish Association of Fire Protection Societies (Tecnifuego), the Professional Association of Fire Technicians (APTB), the Spanish Wildfire Association (ASELF), and MITECO itself.

This annual conference brought together wildfire specialists from across Spain, including frontline wildfire crews, environmental officers, municipal and regional firefighters, fire analysts, and land-management professionals.

David Caballero (MeteoGrid) delivered the opening presentation, offering a broad overview of the current wildfire situation in Spain and the evolving factors that contributed to this year’s severe wildfire events. He also presented several results from the HIDALGO2 project’s wildfire simulations, highlighting the value of these models for both operational response and preventive planning.

The conference underscored the growing need to couple atmospheric models and vegetation-dynamics models with advanced wildfire-simulation systems, as well as the importance of gradually incorporating models that estimate vulnerability and potential damage. Artificial intelligence is emerging as a promising line of research to support these developments in future projects.
