David Caballero (MeteoGrid) spoke at the opening session of “Fire Day,” organized by Tecnifuego and CEPREVEN at the Spanish Institute of Engineering in Madrid on November 18th.
This annual event brings together Spain’s leading industrial organizations, authorities, and fire-protection associations, serving as a premier forum for sharing experiences, technologies, and methodologies across multiple fields of fire engineering.
David highlighted the major challenge posed by wildfires within Europe’s changing climatic and socio-economic landscape, framing his presentation around the devastating large fires that struck Spain during the 2025 season.
He also showcased recent advances and applications in multi-scale wildfire simulation, both for operational use and for landscape analysis and planning. This included the latest simulations conducted with the WRF-SFIRE model, ensemble runs, uncertainty analysis, and the application of OpenFOAM/PGF computational fluid-dynamics models to wildfires affecting the wildland-urban interface (WUI).
